Editorial Process
Submit your research summary to The Civilian through the Submit tab.
Upon approval, your submission will be paired with at least two editors from The Civilian’s editorial team: one academic editor and one non-academic editor.
Examples of academic editors: graduate students, medical students, postdoctoral fellows, research staff, professors/faculty, certain undergraduates, etc.
Someone who is familiar with the processes of research, scholarship, and academia as a whole
Examples of non-academic editors: nurse, stay-at-home parents, lawyer, teacher, high schooler, police officer, professional athlete, your grandma, certain undergraduates, etc.
Anyone who does not participate in research
An academic editor will review your submission within about 1 week.
You will then address the edits and suggestions and send it back for further review from an academic editor.
This back-and-forth will continue until a working final draft is finished.
This should not take more than 4 weeks or ~3 drafts.
Once a working final draft is produced, a non-academic editor will review your submission for general clarity and readability within about 1 week.
You will then address the non-academic editor’s feedback and your summary will be finalized.
The final piece will be agreed upon.
From there, your summary will be published on The Civilian’s website and sent to our translation team.
Celebrate!
Check out your piece (and others) on The Civilian’s website.
Tell your colleagues, friends, and family the exciting news that your piece was published in The Civilian!
Put your publication with The Civilian on your resume/CV to let others know you care about research communication and making research more accessible.
